WorkSession

The School Board held a work session tonight on the FY08 Budget, and the potential impacts of proposed changes in State and local funding.

The Governor has put forth BEP 2.0, but the cigarette tax has not yet passed, and there are several possible plans for phasing in the formula change (all of which are positive for Oak Ridge).  It was an exceedingly productive hour — just an hour — for which two of the three candidates for school board were present.

The challenger, I suppose, already knows everything he needs to know about the budget and the impact of changes.  Funny, since even those of us who live and breathe it learned a few things.  As I drove to RealtorChick’s for a quick visit afterward, I realized why the young candidate wasn’t at the meeting; it seems he was taking his evening constitutional along Briarcliff Avenue.

I waved.  He waved.

I thought about the meetings I attended when I was running for this office, and how lost and uninformed I would have been without having done so.

  1. I think that is the differance between running for an office and caring about an office. If you are doing it for the right reasons, you become consumed with it. It appears he has the wrong motives for running for office.

  2. I agree. If a candidate cares about the position he/she is running for, there is no way to learn enough. In this case I am really afraid that the challenger is running to improve his lot in the community, not to improve the school board.

  3. “In this case I am really afraid that the challenger is running to improve his lot in the community, not to improve the school board.”

You may be correct. If so, he is in for a sad awakening. Holding a public office, more times than not, detracts from one’s “lot” in a community. Not everybody will be happy with the decisions made and then you “lot” drops drastically.

  4. how sad, with all the important things you learned at your meeting, let’s look at what must be consuming you. Afraid that his evening constitutional is doing more for him than merely helping his physical attributes? This all sounds SO familiar..could it be more POISIN in the air?

  5. Sad too, might be a purported nurse who can’t spell “poison.”

But seriously, it gives the appearance that he feels soliciting votes is more important than actually knowing something about the job he’s applying for. That is troublesome.

  6. Thank you for correcting..Just checking..as for the “walking” I don’t see any other candidates ,SB or CC ,putting forth the effort to meet the community like he has been doing, gotta give him an “Attaboy”, wasn’t that how it went?

  7. How do you know what the candidates are doing? I have had three prominent and qualified candidates at my door and he was not one of them.

  8. Caution caution, girlfriend. Don’t aggrevate Tatooboy or his mama. You might get bitchslapped.

Ok, Attaboy, emphasis on boy. Now to the politics of schools and the questions that are begged due to this post.

Is it more important to be able to shake hands, and smile or to be an informed school board member with an institutional memory of what has been done and how/why policy was implemented? Sorry, I’ll take the latter.

Is it more important to be out glad-handing, or actually, you know, out doing the JOB? Sorry I’ll take the person that chooses the job over the politics.

It takes politics to get there, but knowledge of the job is also important. Instead of “politicking” during a session of the board an interested candidate would/should be at that meeting. Then while “politicking” he could relay the information and his take on it. You know, kind of like what is done on this site.

This non-attendance at a board meeting while running for the position speaks volumes.

  10. This is a Beauchamp style of campaigning. It doesn’t matter if you are qualified. If you tell a lie enough times the public will believe you. That philosophy does not work anymore. Voters are looking for responsible, qualified people to do the job. We are tired of the unqualified people getting into office and screwing up government. These positions should not be used for personal gain but for community service. I heard he told someone that he was doing it to get his name out there and promote his real estate business.
