This is funny!

The trouble with live media is, you’re pretty much stuck with what you said.

Congressman Lincoln Davis (D-TN 4th Dist.) on WLAC yesterday with Steve Gill:

Steve Gill: But you said Democrats love the Lord more than Republicans, effectively is that, is that what you said?

Congressman Ford’s Campaign Chairman Congressman Lincoln Davis: I Think, I think Democrats keep the commandments of the Lord more, what Christ told Peter…

Steve Gill: You mean like Bill Clinton?

Congressman Ford’s Campaign Chairman Congressman Lincoln Davis: No, I …

Steve Gill: Exactly which one are you talking about?

Congressman Ford’s Campaign Chairman Congressman Lincoln Davis: I’m not talking about the individual sense.  I’m talking about as a party, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, education…

Steve Gill: I don’t remember any of those being listed in the 10 Commandments.

Congressman Ford’s Campaign Chairman Congressman Lincoln Davis: Oh I do!  It, it it’s not the 10 commandments. It it’s, we don’t live by the 10 commandments (sigh).

Steve Gill: We’re done.  We appreciate you being with us.

The audio clip is here.

Lincoln probably does a pretty good job of living by the 10 Commandments — I wouldn’t insinuate otherwise — but trying to filter political parties through that criteria is a losing proposition.  Every time.

  1. I think it is what has happened in “talk” radio/T.V. 1) a host gets a guest, 2) guest comes on, 3)time gets short, guest is interrupted, or is not allowed to finish (in this case both). Gill is as obnoxious as any other “talk radio host”. Folks this is entertainment, not about getting any message out but the host’s. If you like talk radio/T.V. I’m sure you would really enjoy Smokey Mountain Rasslin. It aint real either.

I have spoken to Lincoln several times, met with him personally. I can assure you that his answer, had it been allowed to be presented, would have been explained. It might have been better or worse. However, we will never know because he wasn’t allowed to finish, at least in this sound bite.

  2. It’s true enough that he wasn’t allowed to finish, and also true that his complete answer “might have been better or worse.”

Still, I thought him smarter than to try to label one political party as more Christian than another. It doesn’t matter which one… trying to make either argument is stupid.

Stick to policy, Congressman Davis. You really don’t want to get caught trying to out-frank Terry Frank.

  3. Terry Frank is a clown. Both the guys in this transcript are idiots. And daco, having nothing to add, adds nothing, as usual.

  4. Lincoln has addressed this in open meetings. He simply wishes to counter the religious right who portray Republicans as God fearing and Democrats as Godless, to make the scales of “justice” or the market reach equalibrium. He appears, rightly or wrongly, to think that can be accomplished by attempting to prove in speeches to not be true. His message is simply that Republicans don’t have the high ground as claimed in Talk Radio/T.V. on religion. He has those same beliefs, and when it transfers to policy it is to assist “like Social Security.”

His true agenda is to balance the argument to make it a non argument so that more substance can be reached.

You did not include in the clip, or it is not available, what happenings led to this discussion.

Oh, and it has been fun sitting on the sidelines on this site and on AT. Especially watching daco and doc carry on. I say carry on.

  5. The notion that either of the major political parties in America is more religious than the other is just silly. Davis is a fool to advance this position, and Gill is a fool to make it a topic for discussion. It is simply a foolish dialog.

  6. Yep, doc you are correct. That is why I have a dislike for talk radio, it lowers the playing field to non issues. However, some people on the Democratic side wish to go on the offensive to present their personal ideals. It appears religion as a socially cohesive institution is still important. The real issues are detracted from because of this type dialogue. This, I suspect, is why the right uses this argument often. Works well, huh?

  7. “It appears religion as a socially cohesive institution is still important.”

Evidently. Even the Democrats think there is gold in them thar hills. Getting funny IMHO.
