  1. Given the discussion about homework over at Atomictumor, I wonder how music practice fits into that scheme? I know there are various ways to approach music instruction, but it seems to depend on consistent and regular effort, i.e. practice, or homework.

  2. OK, maybe it didn’t come clear, but I was talking more about the “homework” consisting of busy work that teachers feel obligated to give the students. Studying, when needed, is appropriate to do at home, just like I’d be at home preparing for a presentation given at work the next day.
I feel that music practice is akin to studying.

  3. I guess both would depend on the student’s affection for the subject matter, and the teacher’s approach to assigning such.

Practicing Bach over and over was as unpleasant as trying to memorize state capitols. Practicing Beethoven or Billy Joel was as much fun for me as learning programming.

  4. Chaqun à son goût. When I was taking piano from Effie Carlson, whenever I learned a Bach prelude or fugue, I was allowed to play it on her harpsichord.

Billy Joel on harpsichord just wasn’t the same. Come to think of it, Billy Joel was pretty much unknown at that time.
