{"id":501,"date":"2007-11-21T18:04:26","date_gmt":"2007-11-21T22:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=501"},"modified":"2007-11-21T18:04:26","modified_gmt":"2007-11-21T22:04:26","slug":"counterproductivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=501","title":{"rendered":"Counterproductivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in August, I wrote (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=460\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=461\">here<\/a>) about Anderson County&#8217;s internet filtering of all computers within the courthouse.&nbsp; At the time, my primary objection was that the filtering was (and still is) selective &#8212; not based on appropriate content, but more along the lines of political thought.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I learned that it&#8217;s actually hindering job performance in some cases.&nbsp; An employee whose primary responsibility deals with overseeing the status and progress of children who are involved with the legal system, was attempting to access the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.gov\/wamp\">legislative website<\/a> of our congressman, Zach Wamp.&nbsp; The employee knew that there was a paper there with information needed to better perform the job at hand.<\/p>\n<p>The legislative site was blocked by the County&#8217;s filtering software.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the same employee keyed in another well-known URL inadvertently using the wrong suffix (you know &#8212; dot-com instead of dot-org or dot-gov), and a full-fledged porn site popped up on the screen.&nbsp; Unfiltered.<\/p>\n<p>*&nbsp; *&nbsp; *&nbsp; *&nbsp; *<br \/>Content filters don&#8217;t work very well.&nbsp; There are instances &#8212; in schools, for example &#8212; where it&#8217;s mandatory (i.e., required by the federal government as a condition of receiving e-rate funds) to have some filtering in place, but in the workplace, it&#8217;s just as likely to hinder productivity.&nbsp; What would be far more useful is a tracking system so that it&#8217;s possible to see the sites where employees are spending their time.&nbsp; If recreational web surfing is a problem, deal with the problem.<\/p>\n<p>That just makes too much sense for government, though.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back in August, I wrote (here and here) about Anderson County&#8217;s internet filtering of all computers within the courthouse.&nbsp; At the time, my primary objection was that the filtering was (and still is) selective &#8212; not based on appropriate content, &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=501\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[7,3],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/501"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=501"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/501\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=501"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=501"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=501"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
