{"id":472,"date":"2007-09-26T05:32:48","date_gmt":"2007-09-26T09:32:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=472"},"modified":"2007-09-26T05:32:48","modified_gmt":"2007-09-26T09:32:48","slug":"help-wanted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=472","title":{"rendered":"Help Wanted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=firefox-a&amp;rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&amp;channel=s&amp;hl=en&amp;q=shortage+%22bus+drivers%22&amp;btnG=Google+Search\" target=\"_blank\">&quot;bus drivers&quot; shortage<\/a>, and the results will show that Oak Ridge&#8217;s problem (this one in particular, anyway) is far from unique.<\/p>\n<p>More surprising to me was finding that the hourly rate offered is about the same as places like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/04\/05\/AR2006040500150.html\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Virginia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/localnews\/2003758228_busshortage22e.html\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/ci_6942093\" target=\"_blank\">Salt Lake City<\/a>, despite the fact that our cost of living is (along with wages generally) lower here.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Dodge, a frequent writer to members of the school board, claims that Oak Ridge pays drivers 50% more than surrounding districts.&nbsp; Although I have not verified Mr. Dodge&#8217;s claim, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/oes\/current\/oes533022.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Labor Statistics&#8217; website<\/a> shows that the mean hourly wage for school bus drivers nationally is just $12.08.<\/p>\n<p>*&nbsp; *&nbsp; *&nbsp; *&nbsp; *<br \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knoxnews.com\/news\/2007\/sep\/26\/despite-expansion-jail-still-over-limits\/\" target=\"_blank\">News-Sentinel reports<\/a> this morning that the Anderson County jail is overcrowded again, with 19 positions open.&nbsp; Of the last 20 to take the Civil Service exam for that job, only 4 passed.
