{"id":541,"date":"2008-03-26T08:53:16","date_gmt":"2008-03-26T12:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=541"},"modified":"2008-03-26T08:53:16","modified_gmt":"2008-03-26T12:53:16","slug":"free-commerce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=541","title":{"rendered":"Free Commerce"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The effort to allow grocery stores to sell wine, as is legal in all but 15 states, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knoxnews.com\/news\/2008\/mar\/26\/wine-sale-bills-hit-snags\/\" target=\"_blank\">has likely stalled<\/a> for this year.&nbsp; It was only after three requests that Bill Ketron&#8217;s bill even got a grudging second from Mark Norris (R-Collierville).<\/p>\n<p>Just out of curiosity this morning, I poked around the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennesseeanytime.org\/tncamp-app\/public\/repsearch.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Registry of Election Finance<\/a> to see if there might be some correlation between dollars donated by the liquor lobby; not surprisingly, the only member of the committee who hadn&#8217;t received triple-digit contributions last year is Steve Roller, who wasn&#8217;t appointed until Dec. 18, 2007.&nbsp;&nbsp; I didn&#8217;t comb through all the reports, but the select few that I read through told me enough.<\/p>\n<p>Committee Vice-Chair Lowe Finney (D-Jackson) collected $4,000 from the WSWT PAC (Wine and Spirits Wholesalers) from December &#8217;06 to December &#8217;07.&nbsp; I&#8217;m not sure if it&#8217;s the money, or the fact that he&#8217;s a Deacon at the Jackson Baptist Church, but he surely wasn&#8217;t looking out for Tennessee Wineries or consumers this week.<\/p>\n<p>The only consolation is that one of the lobbying outfits for the liquor wholesalers has gotten into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20080325\/NEWS0201\/803250337\/1009\/NEWS02\" target=\"_blank\">a spot of trouble<\/a> over their &quot;astroturf&quot; (fake grassroots) website to oppose online sales of wine in Tennessee.&nbsp; Astroturf &#8212; that&#8217;s a new term to me, but fitting.<\/p>\n<p>Sooner or later, it will happen.&nbsp; It&#8217;s just a question of how much longer we put up with the higher cost and inconvenience of a system designed to benefit the network of distributors who funnel huge sums to the legislature every year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The effort to allow grocery stores to sell wine, as is legal in all but 15 states, has likely stalled for this year.&nbsp; It was only after three requests that Bill Ketron&#8217;s bill even got a grudging second from Mark &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=541\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[16,4],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/541"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=541"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/541\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=541"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=541"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=541"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
