I was cruising through the newly re-vamped General Assembly website, and realized that a resolution in memory of Marshall Whisnant passed the State Senate today.<\/p>\n
SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 41

\nA RESOLUTION to honor the memory of Marshall Whisnant of
\nOak Ridge.
\nWHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly were greatly saddened to learn of
\nthe passing of Marshall Whisnant; and
\nWHEREAS, Mr. Whisnant was an exemplary public servant and consummate
\nprofessional who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for his fellow citizens in
\nnumerous capacities; and
\nWHEREAS, Marshall Whisnant served with acumen and alacrity as the President of
\nMethodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge for nearly thirty years, in which position he earned the
\nrespect of his peers and employees alike for the exemplary quality of his work; and
\nWHEREAS, a community and civic leader, Mr. Whisnant rendered sterling service as a
\nmember of the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge, Leadership
\nOak Ridge, the Oak Ridge Schools Education Foundation, and the Oak Ridge Regional
\nPlanning Commission and stood on the Board of Directors of the Roane State Community
\nCollege Foundation, a testament to his firm belief in the importance of education; and
\nWHEREAS, an avid tennis player, Marshall Whisnant was an active member of the Oak
\nRidge Country Club and the Cedar Bluff Racquet Club; and
\nWHEREAS, he was also deeply devoted to his family, and he always endeavored to
\nremain true to family values of the highest order; and
\nWHEREAS, Mr. Whisnant leaves behind an indelible legacy of integrity and probity in
\npublic life, compassion and loyalty in private life, and diligence and dedication in all his chosen
\nendeavors; and
\nWHEREAS, it is fitting that this General Assembly should pause to remember the
\nbountiful life of this exceptional public servant and human being; now, therefore,
\nBE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIFTH GENERAL
\nASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
\nCONCURRING, that we honor the memory of Marshall Whisnant, reflecting fondly upon his
\nimpeccable character and his stalwart commitment to living the examined life with courage and
\nconviction.
\nBE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we express our sympathy and offer our condolences
\nto the family of Mr. Whisnant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nMarshall was a man I admired, but also a dear friend.\u00c2\u00a0 On Sunday afternoons when Hubby and I used to play tennis (the least crowded time, when we hoped no one would be there to laugh at us), Marshall sat on the porch as our spectator.\u00c2\u00a0 He always cheered for me, the smaller, weaker underdog in that match.<\/p>\n
