{"id":314,"date":"2007-02-12T10:28:54","date_gmt":"2007-02-12T15:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=314"},"modified":"2007-02-12T10:39:13","modified_gmt":"2007-02-12T15:39:13","slug":"can-they-do-that","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.citizennetmom.com\/?p=314","title":{"rendered":"Can they do that?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just the other day, while pondering the <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Lissa Kay Burn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lissakay.com\/index.php\/weblog\/comments\/burn-baby-burn\/\">high cost of heath care<\/a>, I wondered to myself why so many medications are available by prescription only.  For example, a decongestant that my doctor once prescribed for me is nothing more than pseudoephedrine and guaifenesin (both available over the counter as Sudafed and Mucinex), but the generic prescription was about $3.50 &#8212; lower than my insurance deductible.  The equivalent amount purchased separately, over the counter, would be closer to $25.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t mind having to sign for it, but to have to see the doctor first?  It seems silly.  The same could be said for silver sulfadiazine &#8212; the world&#8217;s best burn ointment, which is a really handy thing to have around.<\/p>\n<p>Boots pharmacy, in London, will begin selling what&#8217;s been termed <a title=\"Boots Pharmacy\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20070212\/ap_on_he_me\/britain_viagra;_ylt=Al1Qd3mtzNXa0TLbeU64uzHMWM0F\">the greatest recreational drug of our time<\/a> without a prescription (though with a BP check and quick medical history review by the pharmacist) on Valentine&#8217;s Day.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, there are many meds that need to remain by prescription only, but I suspect that many could be reasonably sold OTC even if they carried a signature requirement.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let <a title=\"SK2\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/unknowngenius.com\/blog\/wordpress\/spam-karma\/\">SK2<\/a> go to work on the comments section!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just the other day, while pondering the high cost of heath care, I wondered to myself why so many medications are available by prescription only.
