Without question, yesterday’s elections will bring change to this country.\u00c2\u00a0 We don’t yet know exactly what kind of change, except that it won’t involve Donald Rumsfeld.\u00c2\u00a0 Rummy’s going home.

OTTAWA – Free trade between Canada and the U.S. could resurface as a thorny issue after the Democratic party won an influential swath of Washington’s political real estate Tuesday night, said a former ambassador to the United States and political adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.<\/p>\n

Derek Burney, who was posted to Washington under Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney in 1989, said that on the issue of trade with Canada “there’s not much good news” that can come from the election result because Democrats are more likely to bring a “protectionist” bent to their work in Congress, as opposed to Republicans who bring a “freer-trade mentality.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hmmm.\u00c2\u00a0 The Canadians tend to be a fairly liberal lot, and that’s fine — they can govern as they choose.\u00c2\u00a0 There is just a touch of irony in the fact that they prefer the Dems’ ideology, but the Republicans’ way of doing business.<\/p>\n

Russia’s a little worried about it too<\/a> —<\/p>\n

The Democratic takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday is likely to stall Russia’s bid to join the World Trade Organization, lawmakers from both parties said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Doubts voiced by U.S. officials came on the same day that Russia’s top trade official, German Gref, declared the country was steadily moving closer to WTO accession.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
