It’s your<\/em> money, and you have a right to know how it’s being used.
\nEach court in Anderson County (which, by itself, comprises the 7th Judicial District) has a bailiff. He’s the guy who says “all arise,” and generally keeps order in the courtroom.<\/p>\n

Four of the bailiffs are simply employees of the sheriff’s department, and their salaries accounted for as such: Mark Tackett, BH Barker, Steve Gordon, and John McCulley.<\/p>\n

Two bailiffs — those working for Judges Murch and Layton in the General Sessions Courts — are paid out of multiple sources, including General Sessions, Sheriff’s dept., Probation, and Buildings & Grants<\/strong>. Colon McCarty, who is not a sheriff’s department employee and is therefore unarmed in Judge Layton’s courtroom, is paid from the General Sessions fund and the probation department funds, plus $3,000 to work the driving school on Hwy 61 twice per month<\/em>. John Shuey is paid from three different sources: Sheriff, Probation, and Buildings & Grants (and now, by one vote, also draws a County Commissioner’s salary).<\/p>\n

Shuey earns $13,373.38 more than the next-highest paid of the group, thanks to $17,496 kicked in from the Buildings & Grants fund, courtesy of his buddy, Alan Beauchamp.<\/p>\n

Gee, I wonder how Shuey will vote on matters pertaining to Beauchamp’s department — both the sunsetted Probation Department, and the ongoing Buildings & Grants line item?<\/p>\n

After he was elected the first time in 1998, County Mayor Rex Lynch told me personally that Beauchamp would have no budget and no employees. In 2002, he asked me why I don’t like him: I responded that I don’t dislike him — I distrust him, because he has lied to me.<\/p>\n

This was only the first of several. My level of trust in him is unlikely to change, but for his own sake, you’d think he’d have learned by now that cronyism is a bad way to do business, and people will<\/em> find out the truth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
